Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) RWTH Aachen University

The chair “Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components” (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University was founded in 2014 by StreetScooter co-inventor Professor Achim Kampker and is dedicated to the development, production, and recycling of battery systems and their components as well as the fuel cell and the production of the electric powertrain in numerous research groups. Around 110 employees work at four locations. PEM’s focus is always on sustainability and cost reduction – with the goal of a seamless “Innovation Chain” from basic research to large-scale production in the immediate vicinity.

Battery Dynamics GmbH

Fast-charging batteries with a high capacity and long service life are a core component of electromobility and stationary energy storage. To this end, Battery Dynamics GmbH develops and produces high-precision battery testing devices that enable fast and accurate ageing tests using high-precision coulometry. This allows service life measurement series to be shortened by up to 80% and additional ageing information to be obtained without the use of complex post-mortem analyses. We also operate our own test centre for contract measurements.

Bitrode

From cell testing with our new, high accuracy, high performance, regenerative digital cycler BTDCTM, to module and pack level testing at up to 1 MW (4 MW with parallel connection) or 1,500V using our FTF family, Bitrode Corporation offers you the equipment, software, and support to meet all your testing needs, and we have been doing so for 65 years.

Maccor Cellcare

Maccor designs the fastest and most accurate cell testers, including

· battery production testers,

· laboratory research systems,

· cell formation equipment and

· high power EV/HEV cell, module and battery pack testers.

System currents range from 300nA to 2000A without power limitation. All Maccor Battery Cyclers come with an easy-to-use and powerful software and offer the integration of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS analysis).

Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB

As a link between science, research, and industry, the main objective of the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB is to establish a research infrastructure for ecological and economical battery cell production. It intends to accelerate the innovation and commercialization process of production technologies for existing and future cell formats. The focal points of our work gather in all areas around battery (production): from battery technology and certification of new battery types to process optimization in production, application, battery recycling, and further educational offerings.

Battery research with the PD-600 powder measuring system – improved performance and resource-efficient production
The PD-600 powder measuring system is used to determine physical powder properties, primarily resistivity. It plays a pivotal role in battery research, where high-quality conductive additives and carbons are essential for advancements in battery technologies. This system contributes to the improvement of performance criteria in lithium-ion batteries, such as range, charging time, and lifespan, by promoting continuous innovations in material formulation. Thanks to a pressure range of 0.01 to 20 kN, the device enables precise resistance measurements under various pressure conditions.

PowerCo

PowerCo SE is a global battery cell manufacturer that was founded by the Volkswagen Group in 2022. Headquartered in Salzgitter, the company is responsible for the development and production of battery cells as well as the vertical integration of the value chain. PowerCo is currently building three cell factories: Salzgitter in Germany, Valencia in Spain and St. Thomas in Canada. All factories are equal and will produce the same product, our unified cell. The global ramp-up follows a modular approach and can be executed step-by-step in 20 GWh steps depending on the demand.
